“Here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!” – The Red Queen, in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass.
In Through the Looking Glass, Alice doesn’t understand how it is possible to keep running and yet never get ahead. It might have sounded like fantasy to children reading Lewis Carroll’s book. But even in the nineteenth century, business leaders would have recognized that they were living in the Red Queen’s territory.
In the twenty-first century, we understand that everyone is racing just to stay in the game.
Organizations that want to do more than that need to decide where they are going, know where their competitors are likely going, and recognize where their customers want them to go. This means they need three things: strategy which is flexible; a business culture which embraces adaptability; and a framework of governance to keep them from going off the road when they do change direction.
At Red Queen Associates, we can help build all of these capacities.
